1st UK DJ to mix Live on national TV

Some great video has been made available on youtube of Greg Wilson mixing live on UK TV 25 years ago to the day. Footage features some bad 80’s looks and more importantly scratching and phasing on 2 turntables and a bit of Greg’s trademark reel to reel action originally shown on Channel 4’s ‘The Tube’ show 25th Feb 1983…

Turnmills: the last dance announced

turnmillslogoTurnmills have today just announced the lineup for their final weekend – March 21, 22, 23. Stating that they wanted to go out on a high point with the last weekend being a celebration of the past 23 years of the club the stella 3 night lineup looks just that….

The Friday night has the last ever Gallery with the likes of Judge Jules, Tall Paul, Seb Fontaine, Sister Bliss, Brandon Block, Alex P, Daniele Davoli, Lisa Loud and more. The Saturday sees the last Together with The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim, Justin Robertson, Anil Chawla, John Kennedy, and Turnmill’s very own PR man behind the decks Paul Stix! The Sunday night is billed as the Last Dance House Special with a house lineup to die for: Frankie Knuckles, Danny Rampling, CJ Mackintosh, Ashley Beadle, Lottie, Terry Farley, Pete Heller and Turnmills manager Danny Newman.

For full lineup details of the final weekend check the following websites:

With the recent NYE closure of 3 other London clubbing institutions (namely venues The Key, The Cross and Canvas) and the March closure of Turnmills London clubbers will be left with yet another option less and all eagerly awaiting the rumoured new venues to be opening later this year…

Dubai check in… and out!

grooveriderAfter being caught with a small amount (a little over 2g) of cannabis in his pocket as he entered the UAE in November last year Radio 1 presenter and Drum & Bass DJ Grooverider has just been sentenced to 4 YEARS JAIL in Dubai. He said he hadn’t intended to bring it with him, forgetting it was in his pocket, calling the charges against him ”ridiculous” for such a small amount which back home in England he wouldn’t have even got prosecuted for.

Unfortunately for Grooverider he wasn’t in England at the time and worse yet Dubai has a record of typically handing out such sentences for minimal possession charges – bagel poppy seeds on your person included!

What’s the moral of the story here people? When travelling to and from anywhere and in particularly those destinations and cultures that are different/tougher/less liberal/more militant/extreme in their views than you are used to, be extra careful/conscious and double check all your pockets and bags before you leave just in case!

Grooverider has 2 weeks to appeal the decision.

User registration fixed!

After much cursing at the computer screen and wading through countless “support” sites and hacking the mess that is php I have sorted it. It is now nice and easy to sign up – just add a username and email address and your password gets sent to you. What a mission for something so simple but we got there in the end!

Fatboy beach bash go ahead

fatboy slim

Just spotted a bit of news that Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim has just been given the go ahead for his fourth Big Beach Boutique party down at Brighton later this year. 2 nights in September with a 22,000 capacity each night – first tix released to locals. Given an estimated 250,000 punters turned up for the first event in 2002 a capacity of 22,000 may be a bit optimistic on the local authorities part don’t we think? My prediction is every man and his dog will head down to totally roadblock the beach and most of Brighton as before.

Incidentally I am still not bitter at missing the 2002 event thanks to being rained in and stuck in a plane on a tarmac in Majorca, Spain after my first trip to Ibiza. Yes the one with the yacht incident – I take “wrecked in Ibiza” to another level but that’s a story for another day. At least all my mates who made it down there can and do still rub it in to this day, and I can always see it on DVD. No not bitter at all.

Typical

Welcome to my new blog covering all things dance music. As the description says -

“a place for thoughts, comments, ideas, reviews and reflection on electronic music, DJs, artists, news and events from the dance music industry…”

Please kick back and enjoy this blog, comment where you will and feel free to contribute and get in touch if you would like. DJ and producer Danny Tenaglia was onto something when he came up with that seminal classic track ‘Music is The Answer’:

Music is the answer
to your problems
Keep on moving
then you can solve them
If you feel that you can take no more
and your feet are headed for the door
Gotta keep on dancin and prancin…
